Cancer is a scary word. But when you know all the facts, knowledge and understanding can reduce the fear. Find out everything you need to know about cancer and its effects...

What is Cancer Treatment

Cancer is considered as one of the deadliest diseases in the world, claiming millions of lives every year.  It is then important to be informed of what is cancer treatment available for a patient who is diagnosed with the disease.  Cancer is caused by cells that multiply uncontrollably in various parts of the body.  There have been over a hundred types of cancer identified and the question still remains, what is cancer treatment possible to treat each one of them?

Cancer begins when there is a mutation in the genes of a cell making it unable to die.  The cell just carries on multiplying until it forms a mass or a polyp. The cause of the mutations in the DNA of the cell is usually from radiation, x-rays, carcinogens, and other chemicals.  It is then important to realize that having a successful cancer treatment will depend on how early the cancer is detected.  What is cancer treatment that is most effective?  It still depends on a number of factors such as size, severity and grade of the tumours, the general health status of the patient, and if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.  Assessment of the patient’s case is essential.
There are a number of cancer treatments available for cancer patients but the most popular ones are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Surgery for Cancer Treatment

Surgery is done to either diagnose the cancer patient through biopsy, as a preventive measure or to remove the tumour and the affected tissues of the body.  There are different types of surgery done on different cases of the cancer patient.  Some will have the tumours removed wholly while others will only have parts of the tumours removed due to complications to the organ that it is attached to.

Chemotherapy for Cancer Treatment

Chemotherapy is largely associated with treating cancer. Drugs are used to stop the cancer cells from multiplying and reaching the other parts of the body by destroying the proteins within the DNA of the cancer cells. However, this cancer treatment also kills healthy cells that are rapidly multiplying just like cancer cells. Chemotherapy carries with it a lot of side effects that may be uncomfortable and undesirable to the cancer patient such as fatigue, hair loss, bleeding, nausea and vomiting.

Radiation Therapy for Cancer Treatment

Radiation therapy uses high energy beams to target cancerous cells and destroy them to stop them from multiplying. The beams are able to breakdown the molecules in the cells and kill them as much as possible.  Usually, radiation therapy is done in conjunction with chemotherapy or after surgery so that the remaining cancer cells that were not removed or killed after the other treatments will completely be destroyed.

There are also other cancer treatments that may be suggested by the medical oncologist to the patient depending on the severity of the case of the cancer patient.  With the advancement in technology today, risks are lowered and success rates are starting to go up.  The future is still very big for treatments of the disease because many research firms and organizations are looking into the best cure for the dreaded disease.
