Cancer Medication

There are a lot of cancer medications in the market today which increases the hope for survival of a lot of cancer patients in their fight against the disease.  Cancer is regarded as one of the most challenging illnesses that plague our world today and research has been carried out since the discovery of its existence in order to look for possible cancer medication. 

Alkylating Agents

Alkylating agents are used to directly destroy the DNA of the cancerous cells and stop them from multiplying.  These are utilized in the treatment of acute and chronic leukaemia, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, multiple myeloma and sarcoma.  However, one of the side effects of alkylating agents cancer medication is permanent damage in the bone marrow.  There are also cases when complications arise from this cancer medication such as relapse or development of acute leukaemia.


Antimetabolites act as interference in the development of the DNA and RNA in a cell. The result is a failure in the replication of the cancer cells. Antimetabolites are used to treat leukaemia, breast tumours, ovarian tumours and intestinal tract tumours.


Anthracyclines are used as cancer medication because it stops the replication of DNA in cancerous cells. By doing so, these faulty cells do not multiply, thus preventing the development of tumours.  Anthracyclines also act as interference in the production of enzymes that are required by these cancerous cells in order for them to grow.  Anthracyclines are used in treating a wide range of cancers.  However, high doses of Anthracyclines may result to heart damage.


Corticosteroids are cancer medication that is used in chemotherapy sessions due to their anti-emetic properties.  Corticosteroids help the patient in not feeling any nausea, episodes of vomiting and allergic reactions from chemotherapy.  Corticosteroids are also effective in weakening the development of cancerous cells in lymphoma, leukaemia and multiple myeloma.

Mitotic Inhibitors

Mitotic inhibitors aim to cease all operations related to mitosis and protein production.  By doing so, cancerous cells stop to multiply and are prevented from developing further.  Mitotic inhibitors are cancer medication used in patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer, lung cancer, myelomas, lymphomas and leukaemia.  One of the biggest side effect of mitotic inhibitors is that is can damage the peripheral nervous system of the patient.

Topoisomerase Inhibitors

Topoisomerase inhibitors also act as interference in the replication of the DNA of the cancerous cells.  It specifically acts upon the enzyme called Topoisomerase and forces the cell to cease multiplying.  Topoisomerase inhibitors are used as cancer medication in patients with leukaemia, lung cancer, ovarian cancer and gastrointestinal cancer.

These cancer medications should only be used under the supervision of a licensed medical professional.  It is important for a patient to educate himself about the risks and effects of the cancer medication in order to be aware of the possible changes in the body during the course of the cancer medication.  It is also important to note that as cancer medications are not an absolute guarantee that the cancer will be cured, but these cancer medications can only aid in the success of the whole cancer treatment.
