Cancer Care

Cancer care is very important for any patient diagnosed with the disease. Doctors actually encourage family members, friends and other loved ones, to help improve the quality of life of cancer patients as much as possible as they go through treatments and post cancer therapies.  It is important to know symptom management to help cancer patients breeze through the whole experience in the best possible way, with less stress and pain, as much as possible.

Patients Experience Concurrent Symptoms

Cancer patients need extensive cancer care due to the wide range of concurrent symptoms that they experience throughout the course of the disease.  Patients diagnosed with cancer have reported the following general symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness

Some of the symptoms are directly related to the cancer itself while others are just a result of the cancer treatments that the patient is going through.  Some symptoms are acute while others tend to be long term in nature or chronic.  When the symptoms carry on for a long period of time, it generally alters teh quality of life of the patient which increases the need for total cancer care.

Symptom Management in Cancer Care

Understanding the principles of symptom management may help the cancer patient carry on with the fight against the disease and can greatly reduce the stress and distress the illness puts on not only the patient but also on the family and friends.

  • Show Interest

Cancer patients need to be understood most especially with their state of being along with the pain that is included in their plight.  Ask the patient about the symptoms and be involved in the assessment and treatment procedures.  Inquire about the level of pain by letting them tell you the severity on a scale of 1-10.

  • Prioritize Symptoms

There are a lot of symptoms and side effects that will manifest over the course of the illness so it is important to know which one of them needs to be given attention quickly.  Talk to the doctor about this and make a list of a plan of action when the symptoms occur.

  • Comply with Dosages and Schedules Strictly

The treatment regimen of cancer patients requires a lot of time, effort and understanding.  It is important to strictly comply with the dosages, schedules and other instructions from the doctor in order to increase the effectiveness of the whole treatment program.  Do not miss a pill or a scheduled appointment with the doctor and have a contingency plan when that happens. Keep communication lines open with your doctor in case emergency cases happen.

  • One Change at a Time

As the cancer develops, the medications and other treatment plans may be altered. It would be helpful to make one change at a time to see if there are any side effects and to assess the level of intolerability of the cancer patient to a drug or treatment procedure.  One change at a time is also needed in order to let the patient adjust fully prior to incorporating another change in his lifestyle.
