Types of Cancer Specialists

  • Medical Oncologist
  • This is the cancer specialist you will most probably communicate with when you are diagnosed with cancer up until the whole duration of your treatment.  The medical oncologist will look after your progress and plan the logistics of your treatment with other cancer specialists.  The medical oncologist is also the one responsible for your chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immunotherapy.  You are required to make regular trips to see your medical oncologist to monitor your health status.

  • Radiation Oncologist
  • The radiation oncologist is the one who is responsible in the treatment of cancer through radiation therapy.  They are well trained in interpreting x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and other imaging results.

  • Surgical Oncologist
  • The surgical oncologist is specially trained in performing surgical procedures on patients with cancer.  This cancer specialist is usually called when tumours needed to be tested or analysed through biopsy.  They are also called in when surgical procedures need to be done to remove the tumours and underlying cancerous tissues.

There may be some instances wherein other doctors who are experts in their field need to be called in to provide assistance to patients with cancer.  They may provide consultative services or even perform surgical procedures when necessary.

Criteria for Good Cancer Specialists

It is important for you to take a look at the experience of the cancer specialist that you would like to work with.  Inquire about the number of cases that the cancer specialist has dealt with in the past and if s/he is working with patients on a regular basis.  By inquiring about this, you can be sure that your cancer specialist is highly experienced in dealing with different cases of cancer similar to yours.
Ask about the cancer specialist’s qualifications such as education, certifications, published journal articles, trainings, and even conferences that s/he has attended.  By knowing that your cancer specialist keeps up to date with the latest about your type of cancer, you will be able to feel more at ease with the cancer specialist’s ability to treat you.

Try to have a feel of your cancer specialists’ overall personality.  It is important that the patient is at ease with the doctor at all times so that they can communicate with each other properly.  Try to ask questions and see if the doctor is open to your inquiries.  Inquire about the doctor’s availability because as a patient, you need to keep communication lines open for when you need the doctor the most.  Cancer is a serious matter and so you need to have someone who is very knowledgeable about the disease and is ready to help you out with your condition at any point in time.
