What exactly is cancer?

An uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body is known as cancer. These abnormal cells are also known as cancerous or malignant cells. Usually the normal cells in our body multiply whenever our body needs them and they die when our body doesn’t need them. However, when the normal cell starts multiplying quickly in our body or if they forget to die, then cancer appears to occur. Hence, cancer is known as a disease which is caused due to uncontrolled growth of cells in an individual’s body.

Types of cancer

There are many different kinds of cancer like Breast cancer, Lung cancer, Brain cancer, Liver cancer, Skin cancer etc. The list is simply endless! Its symptoms are quite varied as it depends on where the cancer is located and how big the tumor is. Some of the main symptoms of cancer are fatigue, night sweats, chills, weight loss, fever and loss of appetite. Some cancerous tumors can be even felt or seen through the skin especially in case of breast cancer. A mole on the skin can sometimes be cancerous. Skin cancer is often visible, so it makes it easier to detect cancer at an early stage. White patches or white spots inside the mouth or on the tongue can be oral cancer. So, incase a person finds any symptom related to those of cancer, he should immediately take an appointment with a doctor. The doctor would then suggest a few different kinds of tests as there is no single test that can detect cancer accurately. Hence, a variety of blood tests, urinalysis and tumor markers will be suggested by the doctor.

Checking for cancer

It is always important to find cancer as early as possible because some common cancers can be treated easily, if detected earlier. The abnormal cells of the body start clumping together to form tumors, except in the case of leukemia. Leukemia is a type of cancer in the blood or bone marrow of an individual. However, if the tumor is detected when it is still small then curing of cancer can be easy. An individual is at a high risk of cancer if in case there is a history of cancer in the family or if the person has a habit of smoking, drinking or is exposed to chemicals that can cause cancer. Doctors can check out for different types of cancer depending upon the individual's age and risk factors. Doctors usually recommend individuals to check for cancer more often who are at a higher risk of having cancer. So, always remember, the sooner you act, the better!

Preventing cancer

As the old saying goes “Prevention is always better than cure.” If in case an individual is at a higher risk of getting cancer then he needs to take some simple steps to prevent this disease. Eat a healthy diet, maintain your weight, exercise, avoid smoking and alcohol and use sunscreens while going out in the sun. These simple steps would help you in preventing from having this dreadful disease.
